What is the Price of the Injuries in Die Hard?

What Will Die Hard Cost John McClane?

Every year the question is presented— is Die Hard a Christmas movie, and every year two opposing camps form. The first strongly believes that it is, in fact, a Christmas movie, and the second one is wrong. But that’s not what we’re here to discuss today!

We’re here to discuss what the injuries John McClane sustained in Die Hard would cost for him and his local hospital. We here at Cleverley + Associates can’t weigh in on a dislocated shoulder, but we are experts on hospital data! Let’s look at the data!

First off, McClane falls down the stairs while also connecting his fist with another man’s face. This is pretty early in the movie, so cinema logic determines he didn’t do much damage to himself with this stunt, but he should probably still get his skull checked out.

Let’s order an MRI, CT, and ImPACT test.

We can take a look at the change over the last few years.

This one wasn’t so bad, but next up is bare feet on broken glass. Ow. Owie. Obviously, we’re simplifying his treatment quite a bit, but let’s say he’s going to need removal of a foreign object, repair of cuts on his feet, some antiseptic, bandages…you get the idea.

Here’s what that looks like over the years.

Now it gets a little more serious, because our hero gets shot. This is going to need a little more work to fix, but let’s simplify it to two HCPCS.

Finally, John McClane is tossed out a window. Luckily, he does not fall to his death because he cleverly wraps a fire hose around himself. He then breaks through a window using his already battered body. Not a great idea, but certainly creative!

This probably caused several injuries but let’s focus on his poor, poor spine.

Finally, McClane is triumphant against the murderous villains and the true meaning of Christmas becomes clear— stitches and hospital bills! Here’s a look at how our hero’s bill has changed over the years.

Happy Holidays everyone! Yippee-ki-yay!
